5 Tips to Being Fundamentally Sound

The past 6 years have been about closing the gap between learning choreography and dancing through the choreography. You might be thinking, what does that even mean? Our answer is the reason why we started teaching in the first place, joy.

When we first started out our goal was to develop the dancers in our students. However, unknowingly our offerings focused more on teaching choreography rather than learning the foundational elements that created joy while dancing. It is the reason you get hypnotized by your favorite instagram dancer or that one dancer on stage that captures your attention while at a concert. You are enamored by their confidence, swag, and joy that is all reinforced by their comfortability with the fundamentals within their style of dance.

What fundamentals are we talking about?

Here are 5 fundamental tips that will make you enjoy every opportunity you get to dance.

Tip #1 – Really Listen to the Style of Music You Want To Dance To

All dance styles have a specific history of the music they are created from. Create an active playlist that will help you feel and appreciate music deeper.

Secondly and most importantly let the music inspire you to move. You will find that the fundamental building block of movement is directly tied to how the music you listen to makes you feel.

Tip #2 –  Find Opportunities to Learn Those Fundamentals

It is natural that once you start feeling music what happens next is movement. Get familiar with how you move to music you listen to. If you happen to feel stuck or would like to learn new ways to move then take some time to do research on the fundamental movement of that genre of music.

In Hip Hop, for example, these movements are known as the bounce, the rock, and the groove. These fundamental moves create a natural rhythm that is always in alignment with the counts with the music. Learning those fundamentals will help you fill in those blanks or moments where you feel stuck.

Tip #3 – Find a Community of Dancers or a Dance Studio Where You Can Learn

You will need to find dancers or a community that is able to guide you in finding the joy in fundamentals. Not all dancers will be able to provide this and vice versa, not all studios will be able to provide what you truly need. To ensure you are on the right track in this process, there needs to be a constant check-in to review if what you are learning aligns with how you feel.

Tip #4 – Practice and Review at home

A huge misconception that adults have about learning dance is that it all happens in the classroom. The truth is 95% of dancing is learned away from the classroom. Like in your living room, in your car, at the grocery store or at a wedding. Fundamentals are mastered on your own time. Just 10 to 15 minutes a day will improve your overall confidence in how you move as opposed to the time you are allotted in class once or twice a week to learn a routine.

Tip #5 – How to Find Joy in Learning the Fundamentals

How do you find joy with learning fundamental movement? Learning the fundamentals can seem tedious because it involves repetitive training. However, if you approach it with the same joy you experienced from listening to the music, you will see improvement at a faster rate.
